![]() ![]() Open the MKV file in XMedia and in the Format tab set the options to Profile Custom, Format MP4, Extension MP4. FLAC audio would need to be converted which you should be able to do within XMedia Recode. If the video is 1080p or 720p then it's likely to be compatible. Just follow these steps and you're good to go. If you have 10 MKV files in the folder, you only double click once and it will create 10 copies of MP4 files for you. All MKV files in the folder will be recreated as MP4 files. To convert any movie.MKV file, simply copy or move it to the CONVERT folder. So now we have a folder called CONVERT that has 4 files in it. Call it MKV.batįor %%f in (*.mkv) do "ffmpeg.exe" -i "%%~nf.mkv" -vcodec copy -acodec copy "%%~nf.mp4" Open windows notepad, copy the below line and save it. Copy them to a brand new folder called CONVERT. There are 3 files there, ffmpeg.exe, ffplay.exe and ffprobe.exe. There are 2 folders inside the ZIP file, DOC is full of help files and info but the one we want is called BIN. That's probably more information than you wanted about containers and codecs. Each container has a list of pre-defined supported codecs. (one device supports both mkv and mp4 but another device supports only mp4) Your device needs to support both container and codec to successfully play the file. Two devices may support the same codecs (H.264 / AAC for example), but different containers. This extracts the streams from the existing container and copies them into a new container.ĭevices will support containers and codecs. This works because inside each container file (the mkv / mp4), there are video and audio streams encoded via supported codecs. ![]() Where a.mkv is the filename of the mkv with the mkv extension and b.mp4 is the filename you want for the mp4 file, with the mp4 extension. Optional: Rename your video file to something simpler, like a.mkvĪfter copying ffmpeg.exe, open command line in Windows and in the prompt type: Copy this file to the directory of your video file. PS I'm happy to choose another remuxing tool (windows based if possible) if XMedia-Recode has a known deficiency here.It involves downloading latest ffmpeg binaries.Īfter you extract them to a directory, in the bin directory you'll find ffmpeg.exe. I see lots of posts talking about how you can import 'srt' files, etc, but my subtitles are already contained within the MKV file, so they aren't importable. mp4 file, and choose 'subtitle'/sub-track-Track 1 (English), I see just 'chapter (x)' in the place where subtitles should appear. If I do choose just one subtitle, and do the remux, then when I play the resulting. I don't actually NEED more than just the English subtitle in this case, so I don't specifically care that I can't add multiple, but the bigger issue is the problem that the subtitles aren't appearing in the output. The only options on the subtitle tab are Mode: "Render" and Codec: MOV text. I can select one of these, then click the 'right arrow' to send it to the output side, but when I choose the second subtitle on the left, and click the 'right arrow', it REPLACES the item on the right, rather than adding to the list. In XMedia-Recode, I set video and audio to 'copy', and on the 'subtitle' tab, all the subtitles show on the left (eg, 1. This works great (the remux only takes seconds) and the video plays well in iTunes/on the Apple TV. I've used Xmedia-Recode to remux the MKV movies into MP4 movies (also tried MOV, same results). I rip the subtitles in such a way that they are selectable that is, I don't 'burn' them into the video I can turn them off/on at will and I believe the correct term is, they are an 'overlay'.īut now I have an Apple TV and want to play my movies on it, 'streaming' from iTunes on my MacBook. When I rip using Handbrake, I make sure to get all the subtitle tracks over, and they are fully functional in the MKV file when I play them in VLC, and in various other tools (including Western Digital LiveTV player). My partner is deaf and we rely heavily on subtitles. I have a huge library of movies originally ripped to MKV using Handbrake. Hello everyone - it's been a while since I was here! ![]()
